Women & PrEP

What Is PrEP

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication that reduces your risk of getting HIV. You can take it daily or around the time of sexual activity- whatever fits your life. PrEP gives you extra layer of protection, helping you feel confident and in control of your health.

How PrEP Protects You & Its Safety

PrEP contains active ingredients that build up in your body to protect you from HIV. Used for years by millions of people, most people experience no side effects-and if any do occur, they are usually mild and temporary.. Occasional quick check-ups ensure it’s working well for you.

Why Staying on PrEP Matters

While starting PrEP is a big step, staying on it is what truly protects you long-term. Taking it consistently ensures you're always covered, even when life is unpredictable. This means you stay in control, stay safe, and can worry less about HIV.

It’s Okay If Things Don’t Go Perfect

Missing a dose or a check-in doesn’t mean failure. You can restart, adjust, or talk through your options with us or your doctor anytime. We want you to feel supported and confident in your PrEP journey.

Your Health, Your Choice

PrEP is more than a medication, it’s a tool to protect your independence, sexual health and well being. Staying on PrEP is possible, and support is available to help you stay protected every step of the way.

How to stay consistent on PrEP

Link your dose to a daily habit, like brushing your teeth or morning coffee.

Use phone reminders or alarms that only you can see.

Carry an extra dose for when your routine changes or when travelling.

If getting to appointments is hard, ask your clinic about flexible options for refills or check-ups.

Reach out to your nearest sexual health clinic or charity if you need guidance and support.

I can’t take pills

Some clinics offer injectable PrEP . It is available on the NHS for individuals who cannot take daily oral PrEP tablets for medical reasons, or for those who face social or personal circumstances that make taking daily pills difficult, such as fear of a partner finding the pills or homelessness etc.
