PrEP Talk - Wakefield Mesmac, Monday 9th October

Four London sexual health clinics saw dramatic falls in new HIV infections among gay men of around 40 per cent last year, compared with 2015. In addition, preliminary figures from all sexual health clinics in England for 2016, show the trend is happening across the country with reductions of around one third being reported.

After many years of stable or slightly increasing numbers of new diagnosis among gay men, these figures represent a breakthrough and are very significant. This decline may be mostly due to thousands of people buying PrEP medicines online (pre-exposure prophylaxis), which cut the chance of catching the virus, and using treatment as prevention. (PrEP is still not available on the NHS, though small numbers will soon be able to access it via a new trial).

In response Yorkshire MESMAC in Wakefield will be running a number of initiatives this summer to address the following key questions:
• What is it that we are collectively doing right?
• What are the benefits of HIV prevention for everyone?
• What do we all need to know to turn this short term success into a long term victory in the war against AIDS in Wakefield and throughout the UK?

How can I find out more?

Let's Talk PrEP - Leeds Mesmac, Monday16th October

A number of gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men in Leeds have started to recognise the power of PrEP as a tool to take control of their sexual health and have been self-funding it. As the NHS Impact Trial for PrEP approaches, it's good for anyone on and taking PrEP to be clued up about what it means and what the future holds.

Yorkshire MESMAC in Leeds will be hosting a meeting for people who are currently taking or are interested in taking PrEP on Monday 16th October.

We will be asking and answering questions such as:

  • What is PrEP and why take it?
  • How do you take your PrEP?
  • Are there any side effects?
  • Who else is on PrEP in Leeds?
  • How does PrEP affect my sex?
  • What’s happening with the trial in Leeds?
  • How can we help make PrEP available across the UK?

We will also be looking at what brought you towards taking PrEP or what it is that interests you, exploring positively the effects it can have on your sex and relationships. This will be led by the PrEP taking community in Leeds. Ultimately we will be looking to meet more regularly and support each other take PrEP.

Monday 16th October, 6-8pm at Yorkshire Mesmac, 22/23 Blayds Yard, Leeds, LS1 4AD.
