Leeds Gay Community
Gender: Male, Trans Man
Age Range: All Ages
This is a social group for Gay and Bisexual men of all ages; their aim is to provide a space where Gay people can meet and be themselves. It is mainly non–scene, has discussions, presentations, social outings etc. They meet regularly on Friday evenings, usually at a venue in Leeds city centre.
LGC (Leeds Gay Community) was founded in September 1982 and is the direct descendant of gay groups which had been meeting since 1971. We meet regularly on Friday evenings, usually at the Yorkshire MESMAC office at 22-23 Blayd's Yard, Leeds, LS1 4AD (map at page end) at 6:30pm.
Our main aim has always been to provide a hassle-free space where gay and bisexual men can meet and be themselves and, hopefully, make new friends.
We welcome men of all ages, though as we are a long established group, most of our members are 50+.
Although we are a members only group, visitors are very welcome. If visitors turn up for more than three meetings, we invite them to join us. Membership costs £12 per year (£6 for non-earners).
Diary of Events:
Thursday 10th May— EATING OUT. A LATE LUNCH AT WHITELOCK’S, one of the city’s oldest “eateries”, in Turk’s Head Yard, between Briggate and Trinity Street, just above Marks and Spencer’s. We hope to avoid the lunchtime rush by meeting at 1.30pm with a view to eating by 2pm.
Friday 11th May— BRING A READING, RECORDING, ITEM TONIGHT. As we go “round the group” members are invited to share with the rest of us... As usual, it’s perfectly OK not to present anything!
Friday 18th May— ALLAN PRESENTS TONIGHT. Our friend and member Allan has acquired a DVD about the famous Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch narrow-gauge railway in Kent, which he will show with at least one other item tonight.
Tuesday 22nd May— MORNING COFFEE AT THE ABBEY HOUSE MUSEUM. Meet at 11 o’clock for the first of our out-of-town mornings, when sometimes the weather lets us sit out in pleasant surroundings.
Friday 25th May— SUSAN, SPEAKER TONIGHT. CARE HOMES PROJECT. When elderly lgbt people need to be cared for we do not wish to have to return to the closet in order to live a quiet life in a potentially homophobic environment. Susan will tell us about a project for care homes for elderly lgbt* people to be built on the South Bank.
Thursday 31st May— FISH AND CHIPS AT ERIC’S TONIGHT. In Beeston. Meet at Eric’s from 7pm with a view to giving him our orders by 7.30pm.
Friday 1st June— RECENT GAY FILMS. A round-the-group discussion tonight.
Wednesday 6th June— MORNING COFFEE TODAY. Meet from 11am at the Lakeside Café in Roundhay Park.
Friday 8th June— A THIRD DIP INTO “A GAY READER”. This collection was put together by Patrick Higgins in 1993. Eric has already read from it in 2015 and 2016. Tonight he’ll choose items from the 20th century.
Friday 15th June— MORE SHORTS FROM RAYMOND. Tonight he’ll show two or three short films from the “Boys (18+!) on film” series.
Friday 22nd June— LEEDS SCENES ON FILM FROM THE PERIOD 1888 TO 1950.
Thursday 28th June— EATING OUT ITALIAN STYLE IN WAKEFIELD TONIGHT. Meet at 6.30 for 7pm at Rustico in Northgate in Wakefield city centre.
