Homophobic Attack in Wakefield
Yorkshire MESMAC has raised
concerns about increasing homophobic
attacks in Wakefield after a
member of its staff was attacked
whilst delivering health promotion
materials and condoms to a local
gay venue.
On the 12th March, the charity
worker was dropping off condoms
to Bar Zeus in Wakefield when
homophobic abuse was shouted at
him. Three men then attacked him
and launched an unprovoked and
vicious physical attack. The
Yorkshire MESMAC worker has
sustained severe neck and back
injuries and concussion.
Tom Doyle, Director of Yorkshire
MESMAC said ‘This is totally
unacceptable, any person should
be able to walk the streets of our
towns and cities free to go about
their lawful business. The fact that
this attacked was fuelled by raging
homophobia concerns and angers
me. Obviously as an employer we
have concerns regarding the safety
of our staff - we will do what ever
we can to ensure that those
involved are prosecuted to the
fullest extent. We are also looking
for a meeting with the police and
other authorities to look at how we
can improve the safety of lgbt people
in Wakefield.’
Three men have been arrested in
relation to this incident.
